Burka Media Coverage

I do not support a ban on the wearing of the burka or other face coverings in public and I am glad that the Government has taken the same position. I believe that women should have the freedom to choose what to wear.  This is in keeping with our nation's longstanding record of religious tolerance and freedom of expression.

However, I do understand that there will clearly be circumstances in which covering the face will be inappropriate and institutions such as hospitals, schools, courts and the border force should be free to set their own policies.

In light of recent media coverage of the issue I believe it is also important that debate is open and people are free to discuss their views, but we also need to be careful about the language we use. I am sure you will agree that there needs to be a common sense balance, which takes into account civil liberties as well as freedom of religion and respect given to opinions on both sides of the debate.

Equally, I want to see greater integration between communities and I welcome the Government's approach which encourages dialogue and co-operation between people of different cultural backgrounds.
