USA Child Separation Policy

I appreciate the strength of feeling on this issue and I absolutely agree with the Prime Minister when she said in the House of Commons, clearly, wholly and unequivocally, that the policy was wrong.

I am pleased to say that this is not the United Kingdom's approach. In fact, when Theresa May was Home Secretary she ended the routine detention of families with children.

It is my understanding, thankfully, that President Trump has now signed an executive order to end the practice of separation.  I entirely understand why some are calling for the forthcoming working visit of President Trump to be cancelled but it remains the case that the UK has a special, long-standing and enduring relationship with the United States. President Trump's forthcoming visit will be an opportunity to discuss a range of issues and shared interests, and where the UK disagrees with what the US is doing, the Prime Minister has been clear, we will say so.
