Commissioner for Old People

Thank you for contacting me regarding proposals to create a Minister of State for Older People.

I understand the sentiment behind this suggestion and share your concerns. With an ageing population and a cost-of-living crisis, supporting the oldest in our society has never been more important.

Although I do not think creating a dedicated political post for this role would be the most appropriate approach, I can assure you that the Government is committed to supporting the elderly at this difficult time.

The Government introduced the Triple Lock for the state pension and committed to keep it in the 2019 manifesto. It has also acted to support people with their energy bills and made sure that vulnerable pensioners get the most support. Ongoing financial support for help with the cost of living is also provided to people over State Pension age through State Pensions, Pension Credit and Housing Benefit.

The Secretary of State for Work and Pensions and the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care are responsible for a wide range of issues affecting older people and are committed to continuing to provide this vital support.

Thank you again for contacting me.
