Thank you for contacting me about Tom Hurndall.

The death of Mr Hurndall was terribly sad. I know the loss to his family and friends was immeasurable and I imagine this grief has not lessened, despite the time that has passed. I understand that a soldier was convicted for the manslaughter of Mr Hurndall and served six years in prison for his crime.

Due to the relationship that the UK and Israel share, I know that my ministerial colleagues in the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) regularly raise the importance of the Israeli security forces' adherence to the principles of necessity and proportionality when exercising its legitimate right to self-defence.

Alongside this Government, I call on all sides to desist with immediate effect from all activities that undermine progress towards a peaceful two-state solution. I am assured that the UK is doing all it can to facilitate renewed cooperation and substantive negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians.
