EDM 1340: Foetal pain

I understand that this is an area of science where our knowledge and understanding is rapidly increasing, and I will work to ensure that the Government and NHS guidance responds to the latest scientific information. For example, since 2019, the NHS has recommended pain relief for foetuses undergoing surgery for spina bifida from the 20th week of pregnancy.

While I do not sign any Early Day Motions, I agree that official guidance must be kept up to date, and I expect the Government and the NHS to review the evidence regularly as we learn more in this area. Pain relief must be provided for foetuses whenever the evidence suggests that it is appropriate to do so.
