Nagorno-Karabakh

The agreement by Armenia and Azerbaijan to end the recent conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh is welcome. The Armenian government has taken this decision in order to prevent further bloodshed in the region, and I deeply regret the loss of life we have seen in recent months.

Throughout the conflict, the UK called upon both sides to end hostilities, respect the ceasefire, and engage in dialogue to de-escalate the situation, protect civilians, and avoid further casualties. The violence was deeply concerning, particularly given that both countries have been struggling with the coronavirus pandemic. I support the UK Government’s continued efforts to encourage both sides to work together towards a lasting peace settlement.

The Government’s has announced a UK aid package of £1 million to provide relief to those affected by the conflict. This package will include urgent medical supplies, such as dressing kits and bandages, as well as food, and safer shelters for those who have been displaced.

I will continue to monitor this this important issue.
